Dr Ian Burke

I am an experienced child and adolescent, clinical and forensic psychologist with experience working in both the NHS and for a number of third sector organisations. My area of speciality includes supporting children, adolescents and their families to recover from traumatic life experiences. In addition to this, I also specialises in the assessment and treatment of children and their families in the context of harmful and problematic sexual behaviour.

I hold dual qualification to doctoral level in both Clinical and Forensic Psychology, giving me a unique set of skills to draw upon when supporting a young person, particularly helpful when the young person presents with mental health difficulties and is engaging in risky or illegal behaviours.

I am trained in a number of therapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), Sensory Attachment Intervention (SAI), Play Therapy and Adventure Therapy. When working with a young person I draw upon aspects of all of these to develop an integrative and bespoke therapeutic treatment plan to support them with their difficulties. I hold an advanced kayaking instructor qualification and where a young person struggles to engage in a traditional therapy environment I can deliver therapy in the outdoors.

I am a skilled trainer and I have designed and delivered specialist training to both professionals and parents/carers. This has included therapeutic parenting courses based on the Foundations for Attachment model.

I am regulated by the Health and Care Professions (HCPC) and I maintain professional liability insurance. I hold chartered status with the British Psychological Society and I am member of the Faulty for Children, Young People and Families.

My academic qualifications include the following;

  • Doctorate in Forensic Clinical Psychology, University of Birmingham (2018)
  • MSc Work & Organisational Psychology, University of Limerick (2008)
  • MSc Applied Psychology (Psychological Therapies), University of Ulster (2012)
  • Post Grad Diploma Applied Psychology of Learning Disabilities, University of Portsmouth (2013)
  • Post Grad Diploma Psychology, Dublin Business School (2009)
  • Diploma in Sports Psychology, Dublin Business School (2009)
